Sing as One: Homemade Ceremony in a Community Musical Book Club (2025) is a multidisciplinary project led by Mia Pixley, PhD, and co-authored with Anjali George, PhD. The work explores ceremony within a grassroots San Francisco Bay Area literature-and-music performance series, Bushwick Book Club Oakland. Focusing on four artists inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass (2013), the study examines how the series functions as a form of ceremony. Through interviews and lyric analysis, the paper highlights how musicians and audience members cultivate communal connection through shared music and a single literary text. Ultimately, it investigates the organic emergence of ritual and togetherness through intentional, music-driven exchange. Psychoanalytic Inquiry (Taylor & Francis).
